I’ve seen plenty of ice creams being advertised as vegan and dairy free but in all honesty I’ve never been much of an ice cream eater, this did however intrigue me. It was the halo top which also has the added bonus of being low in calories and what I really wanted to try was the salted caramel flavour. Unfortunately I couldn’t spot this in the freezer aisle at my local Tesco, so I grabbed myself the peanut butter cup one thinking this should be good as I do love a bit of peanut butter. I was disappointed ☹️ it didn’t taste very nice, the texture was thick and stuck to the sides of my mouth and I just did not like the taste. It hasn’t put me off wanting to try the salted caramel flavour version in future, I’ve been told that the normal non vegan halo top ice creams are good (they do a mint choc chip!) so any non vegans should probably give this a go.
This experience did leave me wanting to try more ice creams, it’s like I got the flavour of it by having those few mouthfuls which meant the next time I went shopping I found myself dawdling down towards the ice cream aisle 🤦🏻♀️ Again, there was no halo top salted caramel in the vegan section so either I’ve completely dreamt this up or it’s a very popular flavour! I did however see a salted caramel and almond Alpro tub 🤭 no, it wasn’t a low calorie option but yes it was the flavour I’d been craving and yes it was delicious!
I could easily make my way round all the vegan ice creams in the supermarket (hang on 🤔 that is an idea 😃), but I won’t be going near the halo top peanut butter cup and I will certainly be wanting more of the Alpro salted caramel and almond 😋😋
I felt it was time to treat myself to a nice lunch in town on one of my lunch breaks. Although originally I had thought this would just be a cuppa and possible cake so I’d contacted OAKhouseBarCafe on Instagram to make sure they can provide soya milk or an alternative and I could have a hot chocolate or a cup of tea. I was really disappointed that they did not respond to my message, it’s a great way of communicating with customers so it’s a shame this isn’t monitored. However, I did take a look on their website before turning up and was pleased that the menu is online and I could see there was a vegan option for lunch.
Having eaten in here before I had concerns that I might have needed longer than my usual hour for lunch and walking in I could see it was fairly busy with most tables being taken. There was one booth left which was reserved for just over an hours time which worked out well for us so we took a seat and I grabbed a menu from the bar, taking the time to check out the specials on the black board but unfortunately there were no vegan options.
I didn’t feel the menu had that many plant based choices, there was the rough cut OAKhouse chips or sweet potato fries under the light bites range, a Roast pepper, roast onion and nut free pesto wrap and a salad with stuffed olives, blackened bell peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. I wanted a proper lunch so the light bites were no good and not liking olives meant the salad was out which left the roast pepper, roast onion and nut free pesto wrap.
I have to say it was a lovely wrap with great flavour and it came out with a small number or crisps and a side salad which finished it off nicely. I would definitely come here and have this again, and I’d recommend it to others even those who aren’t vegan would enjoy this meal. To sum it up, the meal was great and the bar has a really nice atmosphere, the negative for here is the lack of vegan options but what they did have was good quality and tasty.
Ok, so I had to comeback in here, not only for another couple of cocktails (I was not successful at dry January 😬) but there was more on the menu I wanted to try. So I had a look over the menu whilst sucking away at my love on the beach 🍹 and chose my starter of Chickpea Falafel served warm with a minted yoghurt dipping sauce.
I apologise for the fact I’d eaten most of this before taking the photo but I’d once again tucked straight in as soon as it arrived 🤦🏻♀️
This was a real treat for my taste buds, I love falafel although I don’t tend to have it too often and am yet to have come across a vegan minted yoghurt sauce which compliments this really well. The portion size was just right for me and after polishing off my drink I was ready for my main meal. I opted for the Veggie Supreme Burger although I’d enjoyed my jambalaya so much previously that I was close to having this again.
The Veggie Supreme Burger 🍔 is a chargrilled flat mushroom, sweet peppers, beetroot, tomato and lettuce with violife cheese in a ciabatta and was served with fries. Mmmmm it was my first vegan burger and I wasn’t disappointed, the flavours and texture of the vegetables with the sprinkling of cheese on top of the ciabatta was a perfect combination. It’s also something I could very easily make myself at home so I need to remember this for a good lunch time treat.
I wasn’t hungry for a dessert, I’d eaten plenty but yes I had a look at the dessert menu and yes there was a vegan option and yes it was chocolate 🤭
This happened 😬 and once again I almost didn’t get the photo 😂 but it was delicious! So glad I managed to find room for this and have a taste. I was once again really chuffed with this place and with the dessert this time too, I’m going to give this a 9.5/10.
I was really chuffed to open up my dairy free selection box Christmas morning, I wasn’t expecting to have any chocolate knowing how difficult it is to find dairy free options. This box was (yeah, didn’t last long 🙊) great, it had a good selection including a Santa and snowman shaped bar along with a chocolate mint bar and chocolate orange bar plus some choccy drops.
I am not aware of how much this cost so can’t comment on the value for money but I was certainly not disappointed and I feel any vegan or dairy free eater would be happy with this selection box. The chocolate is really tasty, I wouldn’t have known it was dairy free, I can’t choose a favourite – I think I’d need another taste to pick 😉 Mmmm I wish I had a bar left to eat right now 😋
I know this isn’t going to be ideal for all those vegan or dairy free-er’s out there but I was very excited about this and felt it deserved a post. So, I spotted this in Tesco and I have no idea how I missed it before – its right there with the lactose free spread and milk which I visit at every shop!
It was only the other day that I was saying how much I missed brie, it was always a favourite of mine when out for lunch especially with cranberry at this time of year. I had quite a feast on it and although I can’t say that all the cheeses in this range are as good as the real thing I quite honestly don’t think you would notice the difference when it comes to this brie. I’ve had it on crackers with grapes and melted in with pasta and the flavour is great, like I say just like I remember the real thing.
I have also spotted mozzarella balls in the same range so I can guarantee that will be on my next shopping list!!
